（百度翻譯）The Most Important Thing You Can Do For Your Child’s SuccessI’ve been teaching English in China for 9 years. I’ve been able to get one student into Harvard. I helped a nationally-known doctor get into a top research program at the world famous Johns Hopkins University and Medical Research Center in America. I’ve helped two students get into programs at Yale University. I helped a female student get into Princeton University a few years ago. She has gone there on a fully paid scholarship. Recently, another graduate student that I’ve tutored got into the University of Maryland with a fully paid scholarship along with other substantial financial benefits. As I have worked with No. 19 Middle School’s International Department here in Zhengzhou, I’ve seen every student that I’ve had there get into the top 2% of colleges in the world. There are two common aspects that I’ve observed with all of these great students.(1) They all have stable parents.(2) They all have parents who cooperate with their teachers.Let me explain. This summer, we added 27 new students to our classes. We had more than 50 new students who interviewed for our classes. We don’t accept every student. We like keeping our classes small so that we can give more attention to each student. The first question we ask each of the students’ parents who interview with us is, ‘Is your child in an English training center now?’ If they answer ‘yes’, then we encourage them to stay at that training center and not move them to ours. It is not good for the kid to move them to different schools. Most often, it is the worse decision a parent can make.Every professional teacher knows that a parent who is stable, will be the parent of a child who has the best chance of succeeding in their education. After 30 years as a teacher, it is very obvious to me that a parent who is stable is a parent who is wise enough to give their child the greatest advantage for success.Another important aspect of parents whose children have achieved the highest results is that the parent cooperates with the teacher. Why do parents send their kids to school and not teach them themselves? The answer is obvious. If the parents of my students know how to teach English better than me, then, they would do it themselves. As I reflect upon all the students that I mentioned in the first paragraph, I know that every one of those students’ parents were both stable and fully cooperative with the instruction that I gave to their child. Another thing that I’ve observed here in China is that about 90% of parents will do both of these things. They are stable and they fully cooperate with the teacher. Between 6 and 10 percent don’t do these things and will affect their child’s failure.Teachers and parents have one common goal. That goal is to see the child succeed. When parents are stable and follow the instruction of the teacher, then, their child has the greatest advantage is getting the highest scores and success.
(Baidu Translation)How To Help Your Child SucceedTwo weeks ago, a student that I've had for about two years told me that she'd been offered free tuition, free housing, and a $28,000 USD a year stipend to the University of Maryland in the USA. This offer will save her family about $300,000 or 1.2 million yuan. She will not only earn a Ph.D. there, but, because she'll work part-time as a teaching assistant, she'll get experience teaching and finally a job offer from the university after she graduates. In my third year in China, I had a student who got a similar offer to Princeton University. She'd studied with me all three of my first three years. In fact, Princeton gave her a full scholarship and offered her mother a job so that she could accompany her daughter in America. Since then, we've had students who were accepted to Harvard, Yale, the University of Southern California, the University of Chicago, and other top 2% schools in the world. We consistently produce the top 1% of English students in Henan Province.Weekly, I receive messages from people all over Asia who ask me to tutor their children in English. Just yesterday, the CEO of a very large tech company in Shanghai contacted me and asked me to teach his child online. I don't do that, but, I did refer him to my daughter who has a Master's degree in TESOL (teaching English as a second or other language). He was very excited and wanted to get started immediately. He said, "If she's your daughter, I know she'll be the best."The question I'm often asked is, "How can I help my child succeed in learning English?" My best answer is simple."Find a teacher who has success with students in learning English and do what they tell you to do. Fully cooperate with them and your child will succeed."In ancient China, the local teacher had a status of high respect. Teachers were shown respect and honor. Confucius once said, "Respect the teacher and you respect the mind of your child." I find that respect for the teacher's instruction is often neglected these days. Some people ignore or discredit the teacher. Some parents think that they know more than the teacher. I sometimes meet parents like this. It is a huge mistake and one that should be avoided at all costs. In the end, the one who suffers is their own child.I look back at all of the thousands of students I've taught in China and think about the parents of my most successful students. All of them fully cooperated with me and followed my advice and instruction. Parents who didn't follow my instruction and advice would often cause trouble or even leave my classes. Many of them will come back one or two years later telling me that they made a mistake. They lose two or three years in which their child falls behind. Then they become desperate for me to rescue them. Frankly, I'm not good enough to help them get back those years that were lost.Again, "Respect the teacher and you respect the mind of your child." Disrespect the teacher and don't follow their instruction and advice and your child will suffer and fail. The teacher will go on and teach many other students whose parents will follow the teacher. You, the parent, are the one who decides what your child's future will be.
When a student is ten minutes late to a 40-minute class, they are losing more than a fourth of the class time. They actually lose at least half of the class because it takes them another 10 minutes to catch up with what's happening in the class. Their efficiency in learning for that class is greatly diminished. Not only that, if you are paying 100 yuan for the class, you just threw away 50 yuan. When parents bring primary or middle school kids to class late, there are certain things that they must do. I will share with you 'how to enter a class late.'First, let's talk about why you're late. I've been a teacher for over 30 years. I owned my own school in America for 15 years. I had about 750 students. We prepared students for the top 5% of colleges and universities in America. We demanded excellence from parents and teachers.I've been teaching English in China for the past 9 years. We produce the top 1% of students in Henan Province. We've had students who have been accepted to Harvard, Yale, Princeton, University of Southern California. Our average student who takes the SAT in America (American gaokao) will score 1530 out of 1600 points. Our average TOEFL student will get 110 out of 120 on that exam.I think I've heard every excuse for being late to class. The most common excuses are weather (such as rain) or traffic jams. If you've lived longer than a month in China and you drive a car, you know that there will be traffic delays when it rains. You also know that there will very likely be a traffic jam.Let me tell you what to do when you encounter these obstacles to getting your child to class on time. What do you do? You plan for it. How do you plan for it? You leave earlier. It is quite simple. There are always going to be delays and traffic jams whether it is raining or not. But, we (parents) are adults and we know this. A traffic jam in China is not a surprise. It is normal. Sometimes, a child is delayed from finishing another class they've attended. Each teacher should be responsible and respectful enough to start their classes on time and finish their classes on time. Any professional teacher will do this.We know that there are those teachers who want to impress the parent by going longer than the scheduled time for the class to finish. In my opinion, this is just a superficial and very naive way to try to impress parents. In my opinion, it is a silly way to try to show how 'hard-working' that they are. I think most parents are smart enough to know that this is quite immature and a facade. When you are late due to circumstances beyond your control, let me share with you the right and wrong ways to deliver your child to the class.WRONG WAY - This way is disrespectful, rude and uncivilized.- The child is very excited and the parent is allowing them to run to the classroom.- The child enters the classroom and is very disruptive to the class and disrespectful to the teacher. The class doesn't start when you arrive. The class starts on schedule.- The parent delivers the child late and continues talking to the child after the child has entered the classroom.- The parent delivers the child and tries to talk to the teacher after their child has come late to the class.RIGHT WAY- Calm your child down before going to the class.- Take your child to the class and lightly knock on the door.- Deliver your child safely to the class and leave immediately.- Be respectful. The ancient culture taught everyone to respect education by respecting the teacher, the school and the classroom. It seems that modern people have forgotten this. I guess that they need to be reminded.
There's no better time for any student who wants to study in America to begin making plans and begin preparation to do so.Why?U.S. colleges are hurting right now. They have an array of problems that are quite daunting.1. International and 'out-of-state' students pay moreFirst, their current students are suing them to get back tuition that was paid for 'in class' lectures. Most colleges and universities are providing online classes. However, the quality of these classes are not viewed the same as physical face to face (students and professors) classes by students. They want a partial refund for not being able to look at their professors face to face and getting the full benefit of what the institution has to offer. This has soured their attitudes toward such school. It is widely know that international students pay more to attend a school than their many of their American counterparts. Of course, at state schools, in-state tuition (students who live with a specific state) is much less than any out-of-state students. For example, a student who chooses to go to Oklahoma University, but lives in Texas or from China, will pay the same out-of-state tuition. I know this first hand because my daughter did it just a few years ago. Her Asian classmates paid the same tuition rate as she did as an out-of-state student.Private colleges are a little different. Though some schools report that there are increased costs to attend their school for international students, it is marginally different than an American student. In state schools, out-of-state students can pay up to 3 times more than an in-state student.American colleges love international students because they pay more. The increase in tuition for international and other out-of-state students offsets the costs associated with operating the university or college. The second thing that students who want to study in America need to consider right now is, 2. The college entrance exams are disappearing in many popular schools.I've provided classes for SAT and ACT preparation for several years now in China. These exams are the American version of the Chinese gaokao exam. They assist schools in assessing who is fit for their school. However, the nine schools of the University of California system is suspending SAT or ACT exams requirements until 2024 and eliminating it for in-state students in 2025. These are highly popular schools. Colleges across America are follwing suit.Even though my students average 1530 (out of 1600) on the SAT and 110 (out of 120) on TOEFL exams, it is good news that they likely won't have to face these entrance exams in the future. American colleges are going to a more holistic approach for admissions requirements which include GPA, personal essay and an interview with other possible requirements. Some colleges/universities will possible administer their own entrance exams in the future. The third thing for non-American students who want to study there to consider is,3. Less American students are returning to college/universityRecent surveys have shown that less and less American high schools students are planning to attend college. This makes it easier for international students to get into better schools. All in all, there is a positive side to what is happening now for the benefit of international students who want to study in America. Now is a good time to seriously consider this option. Things will likely be back to normal (somewhat) within the next year. If President Trump isn't re-elected, then, the restrictions for student visas will also quite likely be relaxed making it easier for international students.
I never left China when the outbreak of the virus was steamrolling over the country. China could have never imagined that 82,000 people would contract this virus and that more than 3,000 would die. It has been unprecedented especially when compared with the number of the SARS virus of 2002-2003.Now, the even more utterly astounding unfolding of events have taken place as the virus reached the shores of America and has already (and is still taking) the worst toll on earth. It is heartbreaking and devastating. What America can't imagine is the very thing that I've watch unfold here in China over the past 2.5 months. The rapid response, the highly effective actions and measures and the cooperation of the Chinese people has been astounding to say the very least.China took two drastic measures while other countries implemented only one. China locked down immediately upon realizing the potential of this virus. This move was pure genius. The second thing that China did involved the diagnostic, contact history assessments and treatment process.A list of what 'China Did Right'1. locked down Wuhan and Hubei province immediately2. encouraged people who thought they might be infected to go directly and get tested3. aggressively and thoroughly researched the contact history of each person who was confirmed to be infected4. restrict and limit the mobility of people so as to reduce human to human contact5. made all testing and treatment free (this was especially vital for the poorer people who would't go get tested for fear of the cost)6. got every community and every business monitoring and checking tempatures at entry points7. very slowly reopened while cautiously understanding of the implications of reopeningDr. Tedros of the W.H.O. isn't favoring China for any other reason than, 'China got it right.' The actions and measures that China took were amazing. I saw it all first hand. America can't accept the fact that 'China did it right and won the battle as quickly and as effectively as it has.'It has been amazing for me to sit nearly on the front lines and see this miracle unfold.
As I'm watching America panic over the COVID-19 virus, the amazing work that the Chinese authorities have done is being revealed. Just weeks ago, hundreds of people from America were contacting me and expressing their concern for my safety living here in Henan. They wanted me to come to America where I'd 'be safe.'<div><br></div><div>Well, that has all changed. Now, I'm safest right here in China. </div><div><br></div><div>With all of the criticism and blaming that China has endured from outsiders during this historical crisis, China has proven itself to be leading the world in 'how to handle a national and international crisis.'</div><div><br></div><div>Presently, America has 1,672 confirmed cases of the virus. China has had over 81,000 cases. The mortality rate in China has been less than 4%. Outside of Hubei, that rate is less than 2%. For weeks, America was seeing mortality rates of over 8%. Twice as much as Wuhan which is at the epicenter of this viral outbreak.</div><div><br></div><div>I am an American. I am proud to be an America. But, America has miserably failed in containing and controlling this virus. The lack of tests kits, masks and the unwillingness of people to self-quarantine and isolate themselves has been disturbing. On the other hand, the willingness of the Chinese people to fully cooperate with authorities in order to do what is best for the good of the public, has been amazing.</div><div><br></div><div>Every time that I walk out of my community and scan my QR code and get my temperature checked, I breathe a fresh sigh of relief to know that China is taking care of its people (and me) in a way that is extraordinary.</div><div><br></div><div>I applaud, not only the efforts of the government, but all of the actions of the Chinese people. Not only that, I applaud the compliance of all of the people here in China in coming together and working together to defeat this unseen enemy.</div><div><br></div><div>China, you are truly amazing! Thank you, thank you, thank you to the leaders and all of the tens of thousand of workers who have risked their own lives and safety to make sure that this virus is defeated. You are all heroes in my heart and soul!!!</div>
(Add me on WeChat; Wechat ID - BigTEXZZ)新概念英語系列叢書是學習口語的好方法嗎？ Is the book series, New Concept English, a good method for learning spoken English? Why or why not?The fact is, New Concept English was designed and written for learning spoken English. However, most schools and training centers only use it to teach grammar rules. Grammar rules will not teach you to speak or master any language. Especially not English. What most Chinese English teachers and students fail to do with the New Concept English books is, they fail to read the introduction to the first book of the series. How do I know this? Well, that's an easy question. I've attended their classes and have seen them doing things that the book tells them not to do. I've also seen them not doing things that book instructs teachers to do.When I first saw the first book of the series of New Concept English, I didn't think much of it. It seemed too simple. However, after I read the introduction, I realized that meticulous thought, research, and preparation went into the writing of these books. Each lesson builds on previous lessons and uses the most frequently used English words first. This gives the student the advantage of learning useful language rather than learning a lot of words that aren't so common and not useful. My students master the lessons of the New Concept English book using practice and drills from videos I created for them. These videos go far beyond what the book teaches. I can take a student from zero-basis to fluency very fast. I use the New Concept English books to do this. Even though they are a little out of date, they are excellent books for learning English when you know the right way to learn from them.
I've been in China for about 8 years total. I came in 2011. I'm from America. I've gone back home several times. I've taught more than 10,000 English classes since I came here. I've appeared on television more than 80 times in China. I've had students who took my classes for many years and went on to colleges like Harvard University, Yale University, Princeton University and University of Chicago. Many people from all over China have added me on WeChat. In fact, until WeChat allowed us to have more than 5,000 friends, my Friends List stayed full. They all want to know one thing.'How can you produce such high results for your students?'The answer to that question is simple, yet, can be complex. Part of my method is called the 'Natural Approach' to language learning. My mentor was the famous English teaching expert, Steve Krashen. I took his approach and molded it for Chinese students.I know the struggles that Chinese students have in learning English. Chinese students are hard-working and smart. But, why is English so hard for them?Through this blog, I'm going to take you through the method that I use. I'm going to give the secrets to learning and teaching English the way I do. The average student stays in my classes at least 5 years. Most of the primary school students I have will be fluent in English before they begin high school.Follow me on this journey as I share with you the method that I've developed and how I've produced amazing results. You can do it too even though you aren't a native English speaking professional like me.WeChat ID: BigTEXZZ
When asked if China asked to be praised for their actions regarding the coronavirus by a Western reporter, this is the response of The World Health Organization's head, Tedros Adhanom."China doesn't need to ask to be praised. For instance, the pathogen was identified in record time. And immediately, they shared the sequence. And when they shared the sequence, it helped other countries to prepare diagnostic tools to test cases. That, by implication means, they have helped in preparing other countries. But, I don't know why you say. We were in this room in a board meeting and almost all member states were praising China for what they did. It's a shutdown of Wuhan city and that helped in preventing cases from being exported to other provinces in China and the rest of the world. The actions of China is making us safer. And I know there is a lot of pressure on the W.H.O. and we appreciate what China is doing. But, because of pressure, we should not fail to tell the truth. We should tell the truth and that's the truth. China doesn't need to ask to be praised. And I don't expect that any country would ask to be praised. That's the truth. The whole truth."
On February 13th, the China authorities made a very bold, responsible and courageous decision regarding the coronavirus. They decided to include those who had been clinically diagnosed in the confirmed cases in addition to those who had been diagnosed by testing. This resulted in a huge increase (overnight) of the number of confirmed cases. Why did they do this? This is a question on many people's mind around the world. Especially in light of the fact that they knew that it would be misunderstood and exploited by those who want to blame and find fault with China. However, if you approach this crisis with any intelligence at all, you will know the reason that they did this. They did it as an over-precaution in treatment and monitoring of the potential spread of the disease. In short, they did it to save more lives. The consideration of 'saving face' or 'losing face' was irrelevant. They made this decision for the safety of those who had been clinically diagnosed as well as the safety of China and the world. Those who had been clinically diagnosed could now receive the same treatment as those who had been confirmed through testing. Not only that, but, they can investigate and monitor those who had come into contact with these patients. It was a bold move, but, it sends a message to the world that China is being very responsible in their actions in stopping the spread of this virus and to ensure that complete containment and control is accomplished.Of course, with this action, many Western media and governmental sources interpret it in a way to find more fault with China. These are ill-informed people who have a bias against anything that China does. Nonetheless, it was a right move to take this action.
